Summer squash is notorious for taking over the garden. Training it vertically frees up ground, improves air circulation (fewer fungal problems), and keeps the fruit clean and easy to find.

Pick a support that fits

Trellises, sturdy cages, and single stakes all work. Vining types love a trellis; bush types do fine on a cage. Build it before planting so you never disturb roots.

Train and tie

Weave young stems through the support and tie gently with soft twine. Once they reach the top, pinch the tips to encourage side fruiting instead of runaway growth.

Harvest often

Vertical plants are easy to inspect, so you will catch zucchini at the perfect 6–8 inch size. Frequent picking keeps the plant productive for months.

  • Choose a sunny, sheltered spot for the trellis.
  • Use old t-shirts cut into strips for soft ties.
  • Mulch at the base to keep roots cool.
  • Check daily in peak season — they hide in the leaves!
The only thing better than a tidy squash trellis is how easy it makes harvest.
